Welcome to GSDRA!

As the local council of the California Reading Association, we strive to provide you with the most up-to-date information and techniques in teaching reading and writing. Membership in GSDRA is open to all teachers, librarians, parents, administrators, paraprofessionals, students, and others interested in the teaching of reading and the promotion of literacy.

Our council hosts two reading conferences a year, one in the fall and the second in the winter. Members and nonmembers are encouraged to attend both conferences. In March, GSDRA hosts the Authors' Fair which is open to schools all over San Diego County.

President's Message

Welcome to our website.

I hope that you can take the time to check out the things that the Greater San Diego Reading Association does for literacy in the San Diego area.  If you aren't already a member, please consider joining our group.  We meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCO), generally in the 300 building.  Just listen and you'll hear the sound of laughter and friends working together. We are new teachers, veteran teachers, librarians, administrators, and readers from districts throughout the county.  We share and learn from each other; there's no greater way to network than to participate in a professional organization.  And . . . WE think that GSDRA is one of the BEST!

The Bonita Sunrise Rotary Club and GSDRA are partners in getting out the word to new parents about reading to their children.   Together we buy books and a backpack and take them to newborn babies and their parents while in the hospital.  The program, called Books for Babies, is an ongoing project that brings lots of smiles from everyone involved.

Books for Babies

We just recently paired authors and San Diego students for a special day of fun and sharing.  Students prepared for the visit by reading books by their author and writing in response to their books.  Student writing was exhibited for all students and authors to view.

We are currently working on a county-wide Evening of the Stars. .  .  LITERACY STARS that is.    Each school district selects a special reading teacher who has done exemplary work with literacy over the years.  These teachers are honored as well as some local individuals and businesses. It’s a very special night to celebrate the great things that teachers and others have done to promote reading.   The Evening of the Stars to be held at the Handlery Resort Hotel on Friday, May 14, 2010.  If you would like more information, please contact me.
If you have questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.  My personal e-mail is pcline6@cox.net.
